Zohran Mamdani states plans to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, was not quick to announce this decision immediately after his electoral win in November.
"This decision came down to our family's safety and the need to directing my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, the community will forever remain inside me and my work," he affirmed.
Political Debate
During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria apartment.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
