Taliban Utilized Left-Behind UK Equipment to Find Afghans That Served Alongside Western Troops, Investigation Hears
A confidential source has told an official investigation that British authorities abandoned classified technology allowing the militant group to locate Afghans who worked with western forces.
Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger
Person A, called Person A, explained that people concerned by the security lapse were advised to change residences and switch their phone numbers to protect themselves from militant forces.
Lawmakers are investigating official handling of a massive disclosure of confidential data concerning approximately 19k individuals who had requested to relocate to the United Kingdom to avoid the regime.
Data Disclosure Occurred
An electronic document containing their personal data, including names, addresses and sometimes relative details, was accidentally leaked by a staff member working at British military command in February 2022.
The breach became known in late 2023, when the names of several individuals who had sought to relocate to the UK surfaced on online platforms.
Militant Technology
“There seems to be a false assumption that the Taliban are without the same sort of facilities that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Should they obtain mobile details, they are able to track your exact position. That is what the unit did.”
Under inquiry about if militant forces had access to necessary encryption, the whistleblower stated: “They have complete capability.”
Consequences of the Information Leak
Early investigations provided to the investigation estimated that approximately fifty family members and colleagues of individuals impacted by the incident had been killed.
A legal restriction regarding the leak was put in force in last year and prevented all details about it from public disclosure until July 2025.
Security Recommendations
Due to legal constraints, the source and the volunteer organization associated with informed Afghan families they were supporting that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.
“Our suggestion was that they change residence where feasible and altered their contact details. Those were the crucial data that, if authorities acquired this information, would cause identification and capture,” the source testified.
Contested Findings
Person A argued that internal investigation performed by a former official had been wrong to conclude that the acquisition of the records by militant forces was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.
“The thing to remember is that affected people are in hiding from militant forces; they are in hiding. All concerns relate to past work history.”
She detailed terrible violence suffered by affected individuals, comprising electrocution, waterboarding, and physical abuse.
“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get the family to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
